Fun Pack Song

Disgraceful, embarrassing, and absolutely hilarious.
These were some of the online reactions to the modified lyrics of a Lady Gaga hit song, Bad Romance, which celebrated the contents of this year's National Day Parade (NDP) goody bag. It was performed at an NDP rehearsal last Saturday and a clip of it was put on YouTube and Stomp.
And now, the parade organisers say they did not realise that the public performance rights which they had secured for the song did not allow them to modify its lyrics. The chairman of the NDP show segment, Colonel Ong Tze-Ch'in, said in a statement last night: "We are currently working to rectify this".
The organisers had planned to repeat the performance for a pre-parade segment on National Day itself, Aug 9.
But going by netizens' sentiments that were being expressed online, a repeat performance may not go down well at all.
The YouTube clip has received more than 2,000 "dislikes" from viewers so far. Netizens were unforgiving in their assessment of the lyrics. Some asked why items such as biscuits, sweets and even kopi-o (black coffee) were being celebrated in the song, and cringed at the use of the popular hit song in this manner as part of an NDP segment performance.
The ditty even prompted some, like Christine Chan, who described herself as a Lady Gaga fan, to write to The Straits Times to express her disappointment with the choice of song and lyrics. She said that a hit song about the trivialities of an NDP goodie bag was "in bad taste".
An AsiaOne forum user, stnomygawd, added: "I prefer the old patriotic songs, like 'Count on me Singapore'."
Creative director of last year's NDP, Dick Lee, said that the song may be "inappropriate" for celebrating National Day. He also raised the copyright issue with The Straits Times.
The lyric writer is local veteran playwright, Haresh Sharma, 45. He is behind the script for this year's NDP show segment.
NDP creative director, Beatrice Chia-Richmond told The Straits Times the NDP hosts introduce items in the fun packs to spectators every year, and the Fun Pack Song was "a fresh and light-hearted way to do so".
As of 11am this morning, the clip on Youtube was received close to 50,000 views. In contrast, other more popular NDP segment performance clips on Youtube garnered views only in the thousands.
