Journey

Thirty years after releasing their hit song, "Don't Stop Believin'" to the world, the rock band Journey is still believing in the uplifting power of what it says - and that includes band's newest member. Sunday Morning's Jim Axelrod presents A Summer Song:

It's been on Journey's set list every night for three decades running.

"Do you guys ever do a show without 'Don't Stop Believin'?" asks Jim Axelrod.

"We haven't," laughs Journey's Jonathan Cain. "Not since it's been written, no."

"You'd have a revolt from the audience, wouldn't you?" asks Axelrod.

"Yeah, I think they would be throwing stuff at us," says Neal Schon, the band's guitarist.

It may have started as solely Journey's song - but it belongs to all of us now. The most covered, karaoked, and parodied song in modern music history.

From baseball to Broadway, Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" has become a national anthem of sorts - and with digital sales at almost four and a half million, it is officially the most downloaded song ever recorded in the 20th century.

"You know, we did something right in the studio," says Cain. "We did something right when we wrote the song. You know, we hit a chord."

It began as the brainchild of keyboard player Jonathan Cain, who had been laboring in obscurity in 1980 with a band called the Babys, when he got the chance to join Journey. It was a dream shot nobody could have predicted. Well, almost nobody.
"I was starving before I hit Journey," Cain remembers. "Very, very rough times...I didn't know where the next pay check was gonna come. I sold stereos. I quit the business. I was so lost, you know? And I was borrowing money from my father, who wouldn't let me come back to Chicago. He said, 'You stay there. Something good is gonna happen. Don't stop believing.' And he would always say that to me. 'Don't stop believing, Jon.'"

Armed with his father's advice and the seeds of a song, Cain sat down with guitarist Neal Schon and then-lead-singer Steve Perry. Within an afternoon, Cain's catchy chorus was transformed into a rock'n'roll classic.

"When you came in with the chorus--that's all you had, right?" asks Axelrod.

"Yeah," says Cain. "We worked backwards. So the way we put it together was...you do the rolling piano thing you do."

"And I picked up the bass, and I [start singing]," continues Schon. "And with the little breakdown guitar-- it's not a guitar solo but a train."

"I heard his guitar, and I said 'that sounds like a train to me,'" Cain laughs. "And I go 'don't you love that song, Midnight train to Georgia?' And Steve goes, 'yeah.' I go, 'it's the midnight train going anywhere.'"

While it barely broke the billboard top ten in 1981 as a single, "Don't Stop Believin'" anchored Journey's monster album "Escape" - which went straight to No. 1 that year. Still, when the band broke up six years later, it looked like "DSB" would slide off into the realm of rock'n'roll nostalgia, rarely to be heard from again.

Until 1998, when a string quartet provided the soundtrack for Adam Sandler being left at the altar in "The Wedding Singer," dusting off the song for the first time in more than a decade. While seven other movies and more than a dozen television shows would borrow it, including the cliffhanging series finale of the Sopranos, no one sent the song into the stratosphere quite like the harmonic and hormonal misfits of "Glee."

Adam Anders is Glee's executive music producer, who says the show's creators originally wanted Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" to be the pilot episode's killer closer, but were denied permission to use it. The rest, Anders says, is Gleek history.

"Why would Journey take such a chance on something that nobody had any idea if it would succeed?" asks Axelrod.

"Maybe it was the premise," says Anders. "You know, the underdog... But obviously something struck a chord with them, and they let us have the song. And I'm so glad they did because I don't think any other song could have done for Glee was 'Don't Stop Believin' did."

That boulevard is a two-way street. After Glee's premiere, Journey saw an 87 percent spike in sales. And the Glee cast version of "Don't Stop" has sold over one million downloads - making it their best-selling song.

But perhaps no one can relate more than the man who's singing it for Journey now. Just four years ago, Arnel Pineda was a singer in a smoky room - fronting a Filipino cover band - when Neal Schon, searching for a replacement for the retired lead singer Steve Perry, found Arnel on YouTube.

"I heard his voice and I went, whoa. I go, 'who is that?'" remembers Schon. "And I was just completely taken back by his voice. I just went, this guy's incredible. We gotta find him."

But what the band didn't know was that Arnel was singing to survive. His mother died when he was just 13, after a long illness that left the family bankrupt. He ended up homeless, sleeping in a park in Manila, collecting scrap metal to scrape up enough money to eat.

"I'm not sure I know a life story to whom this concept applies any more than yours," says Axelrod.

"Even before I discovered 'Don't Stop Believin', it has been my motto, you know, to never stop believing in myself," Pineda says, choking back tears. "The life that I've gone through. You know, all those hardships-- that I-- you see, I never-- I never stopped believing that someday there is something magical that will happen in my life."

"Never in my, like, entire life here on earth, that I would ever, ever stumble upon this kind of magic," Pineda continues. "Playing to all of these people around the world... What a ride. You know?"

Arnel's 2008 Journey debut album, Revelation, went platinum and spawned a successful world tour - including a triumphant homecoming concert in Manila for 30,000 of Arnel's countrymen.

The most meaningful part of the trip took place away from the roar of the crowd - when Arnel took his band mates back to the park he'd once called home. The visit was captured for a soon-to-be released documentary called "Every Man's Journey."

"That must have been a moment of great cohesion for this new incarnation of Journey," says Axelrod.

"Absolutely," says Cain. "He's made our camp a better camp. You know? His spirituality. His faith. His belief. You know, it's strong."

And it was the start of Journey's next chapter. Their new album, Eclipse, features a song called "City of Hope," inspired by the work Arnel is doing as the head of his own foundation, providing underprivileged Filipino children education and healthcare.

"I just want to give back," Pineda says. "So every time I'm free, I get to reach out and look out for these kids and help for them anyway I can. And I think this will be my advocacy. You know, to put them back to school."

"Advocacy and legacy," Axelrod suggests.

"Hopefully yes," says Pineda.

But Journey's lasting legacy is without a doubt that one signature song - which, whether they like it or not, they'll be playing tonight. And tomorrow night. And the night after that.

Courtney Love

Singer Courtney Love made a first-ever performance in Moscow on Saturday. Courtney Love is best known as a co-founder of the alternative-rock band Hole, actress and the ex-wife of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain who committed suicide back in 1994.
Love shared her opinion about Russia saying that although she knew little about the country she could see there were a lot of beautiful people living there.
Her Moscow gig was part of an open-air show that included many Russian and foreign bands including Britain’s Kaiser Chiefs.

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill has been dumped by her boyfriend, Rohan Marley, for supermodel a.k.a. superskank Isabeli Fontana! This story is beyond tragic because Hill and Marley were together for 15 years and have five children together. Worse still is the fact that Lauryn is currently pregnant with the couple's sixth baby!
Geeze, can you say Tiki Barber all over again? What is it with some men? Sure, Fontana is amazingly gorgeous and a Brazilian supermodel but a man has duties to his spouse and his children! This is seriously the worst possible time for Marley to walk out on his family. Being pregnant is hard enough on its own but to be left with not one but five children... well, that pain is more intense than even the flames of Hell!
Sadly, Isabeli Fontana is showing the world just want a sniveling homewrecking skank she is. She posted a TwitPic photo of her and Rohan Marley with the following caption: "I'm in love with @Romarley 's heartyfrog.com/kfu99oyj"
That's just lovely, isn't it? Well, hopefully Rohan, being the horndog that he is, will knock Fontana up a few times and then leave her for another slut further down the line. It seems that Marley is on his way to pulling a Donald Trump. What a selfish creature! Lauryn Hill should be glad to be rid of his cheating ass; any man that can up and leave his children and spouse (especially when she is pregnant), probably has a history of cheating. Good riddance and don't let the door hit you too hard on your way out!

Entourage Season 8

“Entourage” season 8 kicks off tonight, with the boys following Vincent around for the last time on HBO, which is only offering 8 episodes. “Entourage” has decided to provide a shorter last season, which means Vincent and his gang of merry-men will wrap up their lives in less than four  hours of viewing for the fans, according to NBC News.
With “Entourage” season 8 so short, many of the things you hoped to learn about Vincent and his loyal gang, will probably be left hanging, or at best the fans will be led down a path of surmising.
As season 8 opens, Vince is clean and sober as he successfully went through rehab and he is now all consumed with work, in particular a script he wants to become a reality. Vince will have no problems staying on the straight and narrow through the last “Entourage” episodes, it is Chase that cannot handle his new lifestyle of clean and sober.
In real life, the cancellation of “Entourage” was bad news for the cast, they didn’t agree with the producers decision to pull the plug after a short season 8. The “Entourage” movie rumors are just that, rumors. The same thing was said about “Sex and the City” and they are an HBO show that keeps on giving and giving after retirement. On the other hand, the same thing was said about the “Sopranos” and a movie on that series never materialized.
Ari’s wife, or as she is known to fans as “Mrs Ari” will finally be assigned a first name this season. She will be leaving the land of cable TV with a proper full name.
“Entourage” season 8 will not be different as far as having guest stars that have faded from the public and getting some new exposure with this show. Look for Andrew Dice Clay as a business associate, which is anything but civil on the show.
Season 8 will see ghosts of the past come back to haunt Ari, who would mow down his own mother to get what he wants in this business. It is time for some of this to catch up with the reckless, empathic Hollywood big wig.
Connecticut fans of “Entourage” can watch the Season 8 premiere on Connecticut’s HBO channel, the show starts at 10:30 pm EST.

Anne Curtis MRT

It's not every day that a celebrity eschews the chauffeur in favor of a more pedestrian mode of transport. So when young star Anne Curtis —one of the most followed Filipino celebrity on Twitter, with over 1.3 million followers— posted a photo of herself on the MRT, the whole social media world took notice.

It could've been just an ordinary night for commuters of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) plying the EDSA route, but passengers in the special designated coach for women got the shock of the night when the famous actress and TV host walked through the doors of the train.
Fresh from a flight from Sydney, Australia, Anne Curtis decided to take the MRT to beat the traffic and make it in time for the July 5 concert of international singer Kylie Minogue at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

Few people would've known about this rare incident had Curtis not posted her photo and tweeted about Tuesday's public transport escapade.

"Hulaan nyo kung nasaan ako para makahabol kay #Kylie? :p," Curtis tweeted—and with photo evidence to boot—exciting users of the popular social networking site.

As of noon on July 16, barely 12 hours after it was posted, Curtis' photo was viewed over 38,000 times.

Curtis' MRT gamble eventually paid off, with Minogue tweeting: "This group looked amazing tonight," referring to Curtis and her friends in an accompanying photo.

In the ensuing commotion, the words "MRT" and "Anne Curtis" eventually became Twitter's 4th and 5th trending topic, respectively.

The concert venue, where Minogue performed, landed in the last spot, while the performer herself for that night was conspicuously absent from the list.

It is worth noting, however, that in some countries people don't make a big deal out of celebrities riding public transport.

For example, there's an entire page about celebrity sightings on the famous London Tube is available online.

Nor do some celebrities make a big deal about getting around in public.

Musician David Byrne, for example, is often seen riding a bike around New York, a part of his personal advocacy to encourage the use of cycling as a means of transport.

Vincent Kartheiser, who plays Pete Campbell in the US TV series Mad Men, is also an avid fan of public commuting, and has said that the public bus routes in Los Angeles, California where he lives are pretty easy to navigate.

In status-conscious Manila, however, many of the well-heeled would not be caught dead riding any form of public transport, save for the occasional taxi.

Fun Pack Song

Disgraceful, embarrassing, and absolutely hilarious.
These were some of the online reactions to the modified lyrics of a Lady Gaga hit song, Bad Romance, which celebrated the contents of this year's National Day Parade (NDP) goody bag. It was performed at an NDP rehearsal last Saturday and a clip of it was put on YouTube and Stomp.
And now, the parade organisers say they did not realise that the public performance rights which they had secured for the song did not allow them to modify its lyrics. The chairman of the NDP show segment, Colonel Ong Tze-Ch'in, said in a statement last night: "We are currently working to rectify this".
The organisers had planned to repeat the performance for a pre-parade segment on National Day itself, Aug 9.
But going by netizens' sentiments that were being expressed online, a repeat performance may not go down well at all.
The YouTube clip has received more than 2,000 "dislikes" from viewers so far. Netizens were unforgiving in their assessment of the lyrics. Some asked why items such as biscuits, sweets and even kopi-o (black coffee) were being celebrated in the song, and cringed at the use of the popular hit song in this manner as part of an NDP segment performance.
The ditty even prompted some, like Christine Chan, who described herself as a Lady Gaga fan, to write to The Straits Times to express her disappointment with the choice of song and lyrics. She said that a hit song about the trivialities of an NDP goodie bag was "in bad taste".
An AsiaOne forum user, stnomygawd, added: "I prefer the old patriotic songs, like 'Count on me Singapore'."
Creative director of last year's NDP, Dick Lee, said that the song may be "inappropriate" for celebrating National Day. He also raised the copyright issue with The Straits Times.
The lyric writer is local veteran playwright, Haresh Sharma, 45. He is behind the script for this year's NDP show segment.
NDP creative director, Beatrice Chia-Richmond told The Straits Times the NDP hosts introduce items in the fun packs to spectators every year, and the Fun Pack Song was "a fresh and light-hearted way to do so".
As of 11am this morning, the clip on Youtube was received close to 50,000 views. In contrast, other more popular NDP segment performance clips on Youtube garnered views only in the thousands.

GI JOE

Adrianne Palicki has bounced back from the stalling of the "Wonder Woman" television project with a role in the new "G.I. Joe" movie, the producers announced.
Variety said this weekend Palicki would play Lady Jaye, a commando with a penchant for the crossbow who possibly could have a romance with the character Flint.
Palicki most recently was in "Legion" and had been on deck to play Wonder Woman, but the series of the same name was not picked by NBC. She earlier was a regular on the acclaimed series "Friday Night Lights."
"G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes" is based on the Marvel comic book and is being produced in 3D by Paramount. Other members of the cast include Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and D.J. Cotrona, who plays Flint.

4TH July

There’s astronomically good and slightly bad to report from sequel to a less-than-critically-loved blockbuster created solely to move toys hit the marketplace. Michael Bay‘s “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon” underperformed domestically compared to its predecessor. It grossed $97.4 million in its Friday to Sunday opening box-office weekend, compared to the $108 million “Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen” accumulated in 2009 without the aid of inflated 3D ticket surcharges (and yet, it’s won the top-grossing weekend of 2011 so far). But an overseas bonanza did take place as expected. Hauling in $372 million worldwide so far, “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon,” set the record for the third best worldwide debut of all time. And good news for ailing 3D numbers— 71% of the ticket sales came from theaters using the stereoscopic format.
The last “Transformers” film took in $836 million globally—despite being a deeply unpleasant experience—and even if “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon” fails to equal the domestic take of the first film ($319 million—seriously, these movies excite too many rational people), there’s reason to believe worldwide 3D-enhanced numbers could push this film over a billion. And it’s still not over, ‘Transformers 3’ is expected to haul in $180.8 million domestically by the time its all said and done on the July 4th weekend numbers and if it does so, it will beat out
the all-time Independence Day record held by “Spider-Man 2” ($180 million). Globally, the international numbers may hit $405.8 million by Monday. There’s no accounting for taste.
What’s next? A Sam Witwicky-less reboot with Michael Bay producing is likely, but all parties involved will have to wait a few years.
Bay is Teflon at this point: everyone in the industry knows he was strongarmed into making the third film and utilizing 3D (thanks to his public bitching), and setting up his next one, the much cheaper “Pain And Gain,” should be a breeze. Bay (and Hasbro) also walk away with a huge chunk of that backend—each of the first two films practically made him a hundred millionaire.
Sadly, Universal can’t say, “it sold toys” in regards to the underperformance of “Larry Crowne.” As we’ve repeated in this space before—the mark of a star is the ability to take an unappealing, uninteresting and/or nonexistent premise and open the corresponding film to a gross around $12-$14 million. The concept-less ads for “Larry Crowne” solidified that this was a movie entirely coasting on the star power of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, barely conveying an angle other than “old man gets fired. Parties. Mopeds.”
Sometimes it’s a matter of two big stars combining demographics. And sometimes the fanbases are just so similar, which is likely the case with the older-skewing ‘Crowne.’ Roberts’ appeal was negligible as she was clearly playing “the girl,” which usually nullifies the box office potential of certain actresses who register stronger as leads, as we‘re only a year removed from “Eat Pray Love“ hitting $200 million global. They marketed ‘Crowne’ as Hanks playing old (and slightly retarded?) with absolutely nothing sexy, dangerous, exciting or rule-breaking to appeal to the under-35 crowd (who, Cinemascore says, rated the film a C+). They got the opening they paid for, essentially, so, no alarms, no surprises.
Sandwich between the new debuts was weekend two of “Cars 2.” The film is definitely more frontloaded than the average Pixar offering, which isn’t a huge surprise, as this brand name seems to have limited cinematic appeal compared to the universal love for the “Toy Story” entries. Globally, the Disney ‘toon continues to slay them at a much higher rate than the original, and with the merchandising bonanza, this will be even bigger than the first “Cars.” If it’s good for Pixar, it can’t be all bad, right?
“Bad Teacher” had a solid second weekend fall cushioned by the holiday period. Over $60 million after the long weekend, “Teacher” has already over-performed, though the steep drop is probably more indicative of the film’s appeal than the overall numbers. Still, a home run for all involved—frequently-troubled director Jake Kasdan finally played the studio game and won. Rounding out the top five, Fox counter programmed by opening the young-skewing “Monte Carlo.” The results were predictable.
Chalk up another ouch to “Green Lantern,” which fell out of the top five after two weekends, even landing behind the week-older “Super 8.” “Lantern” will likely be out-grossed by JJ Abrams’ $100 million smash despite being significantly cheaper and not having the benefit of a 3D surcharge. This one hurts. Customary falls as well for “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” and “Bridesmaids,” both of which landed beyond $50 million and $150 million this weekend, while “Midnight In Paris” boasted the lowest audience drop of any film in the top ten, as the film becomes one of Woody Allen’s all-time higher grossers.
In related box office records, “Bridesmaids” surpassed “Sex and the City” to become the top R-rated female comedy of all time as it reached the $152.9 million mark domestically. And guaranteeing Johnny Depp will perform this role until he is old and gray in the dinner theater market, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” crossed the $1 billion mark. Audiences have spoken once more: we still want the same brand-recognizable crap we’ve come to love and or tolerate.
1. Michael Bay Hates You (Paramount) - $97.4 million ($162 mil.)
2. Cars Dos (Disney) - $25.1 million ($116 mil.)
3. Subpar Educator (Sony) - $14.1 million ($60 mil.)
4. Hanks Rides A Moped (Universal) - $13 million
5. Monte Carlo (Fox) - $7.6 million
6. Super 8 (Paramount) - $7.5 million ($108 mil.)
7. Gangrene Lantern (Warner Bros.) - $6.3 million ($102 mil.)
8. Mr. Popper’s Unlicensed Animals (Fox) - $5.1 million ($50 mil.)

FilmFare Awards 2011

Vikram, who won the best actor award for Tamil for the film Ravanan says the award is a more than enough compensation for losing the leading lady in the film. “I lost the lady in the film, but I get this beautiful lady for all the trouble. It was a difficult and challenging film to make,” Vikram said.

He said he considers Dhanush, Nagchaitanya and Puneeth as the best among the new generation actors. But the actor did not have to complain during the 58th Idea Filmfare Awards 2010 (South).  Leading ladies from the southern industries including Tamanna, Hansika Motwani, Rachana Mourya and a few others were drooling over the charming actor. Along with Rana Daggubati, director Puri Jagannath and other friends Vikram partied into the early hours of Sunday.
FOR A LIFETIME
Chiranjeevi was given the lifetime achievement award by Rekha. “This is a token for what I have done so far in films. I will consider it my first award,” Chiranjeevi said at the functon held on Saturday night in the Hyderabad International Convention Centre. He called his wife Rekha on stage. “Why are you avoiding. This is the time to come,” he called her before telling actress Rekha, “She has never been on stage before. This is the first time. I am between two Rekhas now and my Rekha (fate) will be good I guess,” he said. At this point his fans started shouting, “We want 150.” Chiranjeevi said that even Amitabh Bachchan wanted him to do his 150th Telugu film. When Rekha said ‘kisses to all youngsters,” Chiranjeevi showed his cheek.

“You are like a kid to me. I will,” Rekha said. Chiranjeevi then asked Rekha to give ‘my Rekha’ some tips on how to maintain glamour.

Other highlights of the function included three winners from Kannada dedicating it to late superstar Vishnuvardhan. SP Balasubramanyam, Harikrishna and Kaviraj all of whom won the award for Aptharakshaka dedicated it to Vishnu.

Ratnavelu, who won the best cinematographer award for Tamil film Enthiran said that the makers of the Men In Black films were keen on watching Robot and it has made him proud. Rana Daggubati who won the best debutant award in Telugu said, “Now people will know that I am not just a chilli powder maker but also an actor.”

Hope the best days continue.” Mammotty who won the best actor award for Malayalam said he should thank the audience who have “tolerated my torture all these years.”

Swayamvar Season 3

Despite the disappointing ratings, Ratan Ka Rishta will make Ratan Rajput richer by over Rs 2 crore. That’s irrespective of whether she waltzes off into the sunset with a husband or not.
The whopping amount she gets is her fee for participating in the show. Ratan’s quest for the perfect match began on May 30 with 16 “eligible” bachelors lined up. Now, five weeks later, it’s time for Ratan to choose her groom in the show’s finale on Sunday. The three contenders are: Deepak Pandit from Jammu, Anupam Singh from MP who is currently based in Poland and Delhi boy Abhinav Sharma. All three are software professionals. Deepak is said to be the front runner in the race to win Ratan’s heart and he’ll probably be the lucky guy who gets the swayamvar mala. “Ratan appears to have a penchant for Deepak and it’s highly likely that he will be her swayamvar man,” says a source in SOL India, which produced the show. However, a big question mark hovers around the marriage bit. Will Ratan follow Rahul Mahajan’s example?
Highly unlikely. In fact, as the title of the show’s third season suggests, it will end with an engagement and, like Rakhi Sawant, Ratan will take her time to decide about marriage. “She will choose her guy but it’s doubtful whether there will be any wedding in the finale. Ratan is keen on getting to know Deepak better. But she is in no hurry to tie the knot,” says a source. Ratan has given enough indication of this. The three top contestants are middle-class boys with average looks which explains her reluctance to marry any of them. “She wants to continue with her career for at least a couple of years, if not more, and none of the three have even a remote connection with showbiz and the glamour world,” adds the source. Probably Ratan Ka Rishta would not have happened had the channel not put the promos on air in December. Being a personality-driven show, the channel’s new owner Turner was not too happy with the choice of Ratan. But since the promos were already on air, Imagine was compelled to go ahead with the show.

Spelling Bee

The eighth grader from Maryland was quite the scene-stealer at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Fourteen-year-old Surjo Bandyopadhyay of Lusby, Md., was riveting to watch at the semifinals Thursday morning. Presented with the medical term "lysozyme," he blurted out: "May I please have all the information on this word?"
Surjo then shifted his eyes, wrinkled his brow and nodded his head as he listened to the definition, origin and a sentence — then spelled the word correctly. In the next round, he puffed his cheeks, thrust his arms forward and spelled "phyllomancy" so fast that the judges paused for what seemed like forever before nodding their approval, a tension that had him doing a double-take before returning to his seat.
Surjo was one of 41 semifinalists remaining from the 275 spellers who began the 84th edition of the bee Tuesday. Six more were eliminated in the first semifinal round. The finals were scheduled for Thursday night, with the winner receiving more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.
One of the interesting new twists at this year's bee: The semifinalists got to see ESPN's feature profiles on a big screen while they were airing on television. It might have seemed like a distraction, but it actually served to ease the tension. Grace Remmer of St. Augustine, Fla., giggled as she watched herself enjoying Disneyworld — then calmed down and approached the microphone, where she correctly spelled "anaphylaxis."
Among those still in contention were two finalists from last year, Joanna Ye of Carlisle, Pa., and Laura Newcombe of Toronto.
The first semifinalist to hear the dreaded elimination bell was 12-year-old Emily Keaton of Pikeville, Ky., who left the "c'' out of "sciamachy," a noun that means fighting with a shadow. She was escorted to the bee's comfort sofa, where she was greeted with cookies, water and soothing words from bee staff and her family.
A rare spelling bee exit was made by Hanif Brown Jr. of St. Thomas, Jamaica. Hanif spelled the word "nataka" correctly, but after his alloted 2½ minutes had expired.
The semifinalists reflected an array eclectic interests. Anna-Marie Sprenger of Provo, Utah, has a passion for ballroom dancing. Samuel Estep of Berryville, Va., designs games on his calculator. Mashad Arora of Brownsville, Texas, has built and raced a hydrogen fuel cell car. David Krak of Lititz, Pa., plays Gershwin on the piano. Nicholas Rushlow of Pickerington, Ohio, is a competitive swimmer and violinist. Parker Strubhar of Piedmont, Okla., has been to 29 states and wants to make it to all 50 before he graduates from high school. Anja Beth Swoap is known as the "scarf queen" in her hometown of Edina, Minn., because she has such of large collection of the fashionable neckwear.
The bee continued to exhibit a sense of humor in the sentences used by pronouncer Jacques Bailly. He referenced a "set of prison bars for the name Bernie Madoff" in his example for "brachygraphy" and later made a reference to the "The Jeffersons," a sitcom that went off the air some 10 years before the oldest of the spellers was born.
On Wednesday, all of the 275 spellers ages 8 to 15 from across the United States and around the world took turns in the spotlight, getting to spell two words without the fear of being dinged off stage by the bell. Their scores were combined with a 25-word written test to determine the semifinalists.

The World According To Paris

During a recent conference call with Paris Hilton (in anticipation for Hilton’s “The World According to Paris” series), I asked the popular heiress about whether she feels that her stints on previous reality shows like “The Simple Life” have helped create an unshakeable stigma.
And while Paris agreed that that might be the case (you can read the interview here), Hilton said “I love reality,” believing that it’s “fun” and is far less boring than shooting a scripted series.
Hmmm.  Let’s put some extra emphasis on the word scripted.
After the premiere of “The World According to Paris,” Hilton still has a big problem on her hands.  And it’s not even due to the show’s content, which was pretty boring and formulaic in nature.
Paris’ problem is that reality television brought her face and persona to the masses for years.  Because of this, it’s created an image (rightfully or wrongfully) or Paris being the “dumb blonde.”
So why would Hilton expect that yet another reality show would remove this stigma?  And after having admitted that her previous shows were somewhat scripted, to the point where network execs helped her become cartoon-like and encouraged her to play a character (if you believe Hilton’s side of the story), why would viewers believe that this isn’t occurring again on the “World According to Paris?”
Based on Paris’ TV track record, it’s not a stretch to believe that her reality shows are the least “real” of them all.

Xmen First Class

The latest edition of X-Men is a breath of fresh air as the franchise shifts focus from Wolverine to the group’s history. First Class introduces us to some new and old mutants, all of which are part of something much bigger.
First Class is the first in hopefully a new trilogy directed by Matthew Vaughn. He explores the relationship between Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Micheal Fassbender) before they become Professor X and Magneto respectively.
Set during the 1960′s Cuban Missile crisis, we see the mutants struggle for acceptance in the world as they try to help humanity stop a nuclear war fuelled by the evil Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon).
The film begins with a young Erik, in Germany during World War II. We see him being seperated from his parents, and as he reaches out his magnetic powers start to manifest and rip and bend a metal gate. Erik is then taken by a younger Sebastian Shaw, who wants to manipulate Erik into doing his will.
As Erik is still young, he fails to impress Shaw which has dire consequences for Erik’s mother, fuelling the soon to be Magneto on a lifelong thrist for revenge but rendering him unable to use his powers without being angry.
On the other side of the coin, we see Charles Xavier (McAvoy), a powerful telepath studying at Oxford University, and envisioning a future where mutants can stand with mankind as one. He is joined by Raven Darkholme AKA Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) a shapeshifter who has to conceal her true blue form.
As CIA agent Moira McTaggert (Rose Byrne) investigates the threat of the U.S-Soviet conflict, she recruits Xavier to help, despite her agency having strong views against mutants. This partnership forces Charles and Erik to meet and become allies.
Though they have differences,  Charles’ optimism and Erik’s superiority couldn’t be more pronounced – the men’s mutual respect leads to friendship, and they band together to build a team of young mutants.
Using Cerebro, designed by one Hank McCoy (Nicolas Hoult),  Xavier and Lesnerr travel around recruiting such mutants as energy firing Havok (Lucas Till); sonic screamer Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones); survival evolutionist Darwin (Edi Gathegi); seductive insectoid flyer Angel (Zoë Kravitz) and the brilliance that is Hank McCoy, or Beast.
As Xavier puts together his first class to take on Shaw’s Hellfire Club -  Emma Frost (January Jones), Riptide (Álex González) and Azazel (Jason Flemyng) – Soviet ships are approaching Cuba. With the U.S ready to declare war, it falls to the X-Men to stop those boats.
Cue a dramatic standoff where Charles’ young mutants take on the Soviet fleet to potentially stop World War III. As Shaw is working with the Soviets and Xavier with the U.S,  this is a war between them as much as it is for humans.
After the dust has settled, we see Magneto and Professor X finally begin to fill out the roles we recognise, Magneto recruiting his Brotherhood Of Mutants and seeking dominace in the human race and a paralysed Xavier and his X-Men taking quiet refuge to regroup and seek acceptance in this world.
If you are a hard to please comic fan, this film does stay true to some of the original X-Men comics. For instance, the evolution of a human Beast into the big ol’ blue that we have come to love is right out of the comics. As well as the enticing Ice Queen, wearing not many clothes and showing off that eye drawing cleavage. However, there are some thing’s that may annoy you, of course the character Angel is a man in the comics, where as in the film it is a woman who doesn’t coincide with X-Men history.
If you’re looking for a great film and a better insight into how Magneto and Professor X came to be who they are, then this is a film for you. Vaughn does a fantastic job in his casting and McAvoy and Fassbender play their roles brilliantly. A strong supporting cast of talented actors make this film one to watch.
Also, although Stan Lee doesn’t cameo, we do see a familar face in a bar with cigar in one hand and whiskey in the other (and with the only use of strong language in the whole film). I may have had a little fanboy freak out and a good laugh at this cameo. Guess who it is?
